A resilient spirit is perhaps the best attribute to have. We must constantly learn how to get hit and keep going. This is because life will often beat us down, and we need spiritual fortitude to keep going. We must learn to stay afloat and get better no matter what. When the going gets tough we must learn to get tougher. 

Be careful not to allow the fires of life to intimidate you. When fires are present you must develop the thick skin of courage. Don’t be afraid. Regardless of your circumstance you must know that you have what it takes to endure.

You Have What It Takes

There is no situation that we cannot endure and overcome. It doesn’t matter how we feel or what we think, the reality remains, that we have what it takes to over the trials we are put in. This is a result of our Creator who made us with the capacity for victory. 

Our ability to endure is not by virtue of our own strength, but because God made us that way. If we deny this ability it doesn’t take it away. Imagine a car that is properly fuelled up and mechanically sound but not having a driver. Does the lack of a driver take away the car’s ability to drive? No it doesn’t. The car’s ability to drive is built within it. 

This is the same with us. God made us with the ability to overcome any battle we are put in. As soon as we take control and challenge the challenge we are on a way to win.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Ever so often life will greet us with surprises. Not ones that cheer us up but surprises that wound us deeply. These times demand our very best. And we must be fully prepared to take our best shot.

There are strategies and habits we can adapt in these moments that will help us to achieve this. They will prepare our minds and bodies for the rocky roads ahead. We must pay careful attention to them because we will need them when our own goings get tough, and we have to get tougher.

Let us look at them;

6 Ways To Get Tougher When The Going Gets Tough

1. Embrace The Challenge

The first step is to accept what is happening to you. There is power in accepting things that are happening to us, especially when we cannot control them. We must embrace our challenges knowing that this same challenge might be our greatest channel of growth. Difficult times are often most empowering. When we understand this we will embrace them gladly.

At one point I lived in constant regret. This regret came about because of a past event I could not change. I experienced what I term toxic depression. This was because the going got tough but I didn’t get tougher. What I had to do was accept and embrace the challenge and face it head on. When I did this things started getting better. In this time I discovered the power of embracing our challenges. What you resist persists. Don’t resist your challenge, embrace it.

2. Mental rehearsal and cultivating a positive mindset

You can cultivate a positive mindset through mental rehearsal. Mental rehearsal is a cognitive technique where an individual mentally rehearses a skill or envisions a desired outcome. As we do this we prepare ourselves through mental practice. We must envision victory before it happens by expecting and waiting for it.

We must also cultivate a positive mindset. The mind is like a garden. In a garden, If we plant good seeds we get a good crop. On the other hand if we plant weed we get weed. It is the same with the mind. If we entertain negative thoughts we reap a negative outcome. Perhaps the reason the going is tough is because the mind is filled with toxicity.

We must train the mind to endure tough times. This is done by constantly training the mind with a positive outlook. 

3. Keep On Your Knees

One of the greatest weapon we have when the going gets tough is prayer. Prayer can provide various psychological, emotional, and spiritual benefits, which can be particularly helpful during difficult times. 

We must make it a constant practice to pray. God is our source of strength. The way to reach God is through prayer. So it makes sense that we should constantly pray for strength and endurance when times are tough.

Prayer builds up our spiritual muscles with the needed strength to endure.

4. Learn from your difficulty

In the midst of every difficulty is a lesson we must learn. Maybe the challenge we are facing is because we lack the knowledge from the lesson we must learn. We must understand that we are thoughts away from victory. Victory is in a state of mind. As a result we must seek the lesson from our difficulty and be keen to learn.

It is from difficulty that we are prepared for the roads ahead. Our difficulties also prepare us to be much more valuable to society. In my own experience it is because of my difficulty that I’m able to write and to encourage others. From my difficulty I learn patience, endurance and understanding.

5. Learn to let go and go on

In order to move forward then we must let go of yesterday. This might not be easy but it is necessary. We must let go of the things that are behind us and look to the roads ahead. As we do this we greatly reduce the burden we often travel with. 

Paul the Apostle wrote in Philippians 3:13, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.” Paul is telling us here to let go of the past and press towards the future. 

When the going gets tough let us not be afraid to let go of the things that weigh us down and hold us back. Perhaps these are the things that cause things to be tough in the first place.

6. Seek Help If You Need To

There is great value in the people and resources around us. God had put these in our lives to help us. As a result we must not be hesitant to utilize these resources when times get hard. These resources might be family and friends, books, videos or even blogs like this one you are now reading. Whatever they are we must take deliberate action in seeking them out and utilizing them.

The fact that we are going through a tuff time is enough to tell that we might need some help. There was a time when I was going through a difficult situation and I needed help but never sought it. I remember in that time God placed a family member on my heart to reach out to. Yet because of my pride I didn’t. What started as a small problem resulted in a life crippling one. What I found in that time is that I should not hesitate to seek help when I need it.

Don’t make the same mistake that I made. The same little problem that you leave unattended will result in one that can destroy you. Therefore seek help when you need to.

 

When the going gets tough

 

When the going gets tough,

And the seas get rough.

Get tough with the going,

And rougher while you’re rowing.

 

And when the waves splash,

The lightning will flash.

But don’t be afraid when it pours,

For you’ll make it to the shores.

 

When the sees and the breeze,

Never seem to want ot ease.

Keep grounded on your knees,

For you are stronger than these.

 

Don’t freeze, just keep going on,

For You’ll make it to the dawn.

When the rough gets tough, get tougher,

And when seas are rough, get rougher!

When the going gets tough we must learn to get tougher no matter what. There are habits we can adapt in our lives to achieve this. We should not only know this but we must also adapt these strategies.
