Faithful Understanding: How To Give The Benefit Of The Doubt

Life is a complex flow of spirits that entwined. Because of this we must all learn how to understand one another from a place of faith.
Faithful Understanding

Life is a complex flow of spirits that entwined. This complexity is further knotted when there is a lack of understanding. Yet we must learn to understand from a place of faith no matter what. Faithful understanding is when we see like God does. The Bible says that God sees the heart of every situation and has complete knowledge of all things. Thus God is able to understand in the deepest sense – from the root cause. The truth is that knowledge precedes understanding and so if we do not know we can never truly understand.

As we go we should seek to understand like God – from the root. For some years I was a practicing Agriculturalist (By heart I still am) and one thing I learnt was that to treat plant diseases we have to understand the root cause. In fact many diseases start from the root. Because of this I had to identify the cause of plant diseases in order to recommend any solutions. You could treat a diseased plant for many years without success if you have not found the root cause of the problem. Yet the moment you understand the cause you can be effective in the treatment.

It is the same way in our dealings with one another. When we understand the root cause then we can truly treat the problem. Often we mortify each other without understanding that the root cause is the common enemy that we all have. This common enemy seeks to kill, steal and destroy us and does this by creating misunderstanding.

Amidst this common enemy we also have a common friend. God is our common friend. The Bible refers to Him as the Spirit of Understanding. God wants to establish us with a deeper sense of awareness. In this we’ll be able to truly love one another fulfilling the scripture that says “love never fails.”

The Bible also instructs us to get understanding. This shows the great importance of understanding one another in the landscape of life.

Straightening A Broken Understanding

Oftentimes we struggle with a broken understanding. This is the result of a broken mind that often leads a broken life. In this we see that brokenness breeds brokenness. We must learn to navigate and to fix this brokenness in order to proceed. The Bible says God made man upright but they have sought out many inventions. Many times these inventions lead to a broken mind – thus a broken understanding. We must be careful to follow the Word of God and not the ways of men. It is when we follow after vanity that we get wounded with a broken understanding.

Consider the television for example. This is just one of the inventions of man that has lead us into brokenness. Most of the propaganda and ungodliness is spread on televisions across the world. The evils that be will use this medium as a point of influence and control. Televisions teach us to judge based off appearance but God teaches us to judge based off the heart. Similarly, televisions lure us into Godlessness but God wants to establish us in His righteousness. There are also others forms of media like computers and smartphones that will be just the same.

In order for us to straighten our wounded understanding we must seek the way of God, and follow it. The Bible says that He is the Way. We must follow the Way. We must seek to understand from a faithful perspective where we live off the concepts of God. There is a popular culture that teaches us to accept good for evil and evil for good. This mentality will not only lead to a broken understanding but also to a broken society. A society without God has no hope because God is Hope.

As you go, may you learn bit by bit to follow the Word of God. I often say I might not be perfect but my endeavour is to follow the perfect Way. Let that be you too. This is not me but it is from the Word of God. So let us seek to follow the Word of God. As we do this God will straighten the loins of our understanding and make us more like Him.

Faithful Understanding Will Mean We Give One Another The Benefit Of The Doubt

Quotes on forgiveness

When we interact with one another we should learn to give the benefit of the doubt. When we do this we save ourselves from making incorrect judgements through misunderstanding. God can truly judge because He can truly see, yet we cannot truly see what’s in another person’s heart. We might think we see but our understanding is far from reality. Because of this we must love one another instead of seeking to judge when we do not understand. In fact the best way for us to understand is to trust in the understanding of God who truly understands.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

The human heart is a very convoluted place. When a person Is broken this heart becomes even more complicated. Humans can’t even understand their own hearts yet we seek to understand another person’s to the point of judging them. I have found that people are more interested in appearance than in reality. If a person appears to be good then we usually says this person is good, yet this might be far from reality.

Truth is that our judgements might be so far from reality due to our lack of understanding. Imagine the harm you can cause by casting judgements from a place of misunderstanding.

In my own experience I’ve been hurt when I hurt. Once I was really broken and the people around me didn’t understand this. They made judgements that they didn’t understand. These judgements caused further hurt. Yet I had to learn from a place of understanding that they just didn’t understand.

I also know that I might have made judgements about others and didn’t truly understand them. As a result, this is a lesson we all have to learn – to give the benefit of the doubt by judging less and loving more.

Misunderstanding Creates Division

I believe that the major cause of life’s conflicts is misunderstanding. The common enemy we have seeks to create division through creating misunderstanding. This is because a lack of understanding will lead to division. At the Tower of Babel God said “Come, Let us go down and confuse their language.” God confused the language of the inhabitants of the earth so they couldn’t understand one another. Due to this there was a great amount of division to the point where they were scattered over the earth. They were not able to move forward with their purpose because they couldn’t understand each other.

As we go we should also know that a lack of understanding will divide us. Homes and communities have been destroyed because of a lack of understanding. Spouses might be at conflict with each other without having proper understanding of the conflict at hand. Similarly communities could be at war with each other without having a true understanding of the conflict.

I once worked with some youths in conflict with the law. These youths were mainly a part of gangs that fight against other gangs. One thing I found during this time was that many times the violence was caused because of a lack of understanding. Many times the conflict was past down from generations to generations and continue to persist. The thing is no one from any of these gangs were there to truly understand the conflicts from the first place. Yet lives are being taken and homes are beings destroyed due to a conflict no one truly understands.

As we move in time we should seek first to understand before we make any judgements. Perhaps then our judgements won’t be necessary.

Faithful Understanding Is from a Biblical Perspective

One of the major things we will learn as we walk with God is that there are many things that we do not understand. Firstly we must understand this. When we do we will learn to trust in the understanding of God who knows all things. We can only do this by faith. For sure this is not an easy thing to do. Humans tend to operate based on what they see yet our understanding must be based on what we cannot see with our physical eyes.

We can see a person’s smile but we can never see the hurt that this smile disguises. Similarly we might see a person’s actions but we can never see the heart of that action. Because of this we should seek God who understands all things. As we seek God we will become more discerning to make proper judgements when we have to, and to leave the situation when we must.

The answer to the misunderstandings among each other is to understand from a Biblical perspective. This is what I term faithful understanding. An understanding based on the principle of God. It is also a type of empathetic understanding where we see another person’s need before we proceed to cast them out.

Bible Verses That Speaks About Understanding

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD

Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

“He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.”

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Final Thoughts

We have learnt that misunderstanding is a major cause of many of our problems. Because of this we should learn to have a faithful understanding where we see like God does. God sees the heart of every action and so He is able to make righteous judgements. We should also learn to see the root cause of every situation before we begin to judge. Maybe then we won’t have need to judge but to love.

As you go may God sow in you the seed of understanding and may this seed grow into a brighter day. God bless you with His abounding love.
